FACTS OF INTEREST:
- There is actually a name for people who collect teddy bears. They're known as arctophilists, which means 'lover of bears' in Greek.
- In 1902, President Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt appeared in a political cartoon that showed him refusing to shoot a little bear that had been tied up. After seeing the cartoon, a Brooklyn shopkeeper started a stuffed toy bear company, and was given permission to use the President's name.
- Within a few years, several companies in the US and abroad had begun producing teddy bears. Over a century later, the cuddly bears remain as popular as ever with children and adults alike.
